The sunflower is a poet symbol of the self.
The first time a wild sunflower ended up in our yard I was floored. I was slightly embarrassed and simply floored. It was a year when we had a lot of projects going on and yard work was on the bottom of the list. And this sunflower grew on the fence between us and our neighbors. It grew so tall it was touching power lines! I didn't even believe it was a sunflower because of how it was growing. I had never seen such a thing as it didn't remotely resemble the sunflower I grew up learning was a sunflower. So, I thought it was something else entirely.
After that first year the sunflower kept coming back. And year after year I've enjoyed getting to know them and watching many little details about them. The greening so early in summer and blooms nearly all season. They get so tall it feels impressive to be buried in their shade. Almost hidden away in bright sunny days.
And then a few years back something strange started happening. The bloom's head keep getting cut off right before or just after they would bloom! And it wasn't just one. It was, like all of them. I was devastated! And honestly I was super pissed.. I wanted to know who was cutting the heads off my sunflowers. It didn't take long for me to figure out it was the sunflower weevil. This small, black, round, beetl-ish, anteater-ish adorable creature uses the bloom heads to lay eggs. I can't really blame them, it's a great plan. And also, wtf?!
So, this year I finally realized I might need to keep the sunflowers away for a couple years so the weevils will move to another yard, lol.
Until then, I bring to you - Sunflower, weevil, cool autumn, early morning thunder storm after raging heat Nature Essence
This essence sat in the wild garden for 24 hours.
